Taxation – EC initiative to remove need for unanimity in Council

On 20 December, the European Commission (EC) published a roadmap for an upcoming initiative proposing to change the rules of law-making in taxation policy – concretely, it would substitute the current need for member states’ unanimous agreement by a qualified majority voting (QMV) system.

This initiative, “More efficient law-making in the field of taxation: identification of areas for a move to qualified majority voting” is expected to be brought forward by the EC throughout the first quarter of 2019 in the form of a Communication.

The roadmap will be open for comments until 17 January 2019. Please note that the EC does not intend to launch any other kind of consultation.
